The good ol’ days

I have had some more free time than usual lately and by usual I mean it’s summer and there are no sports in session–yet so I have been dusting off my movie collection in the evenings and curling up on the couch with my personal Netflix collection (mostly because I haven’t stopped to buy Dallas Season 9 yet and I have watched 1-8 already). I have taken the liberty of linking them to IMDB so you can read about movies you may not have heard of/seen. I have already watched Under the Tuscan Sun, Love Actually which made me want it to be Christmas, McLintock which stars John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara, who I think it stunning, btw. I have also watched The Family Stone and A Man Apart, to name a few.

I have also recently watched Join the Tribe, aka the 2006 Napa High Football season that comes complete with highlights of each game, team dinners and player interviews…but then it made me want to watch Return to Glory, yes, they do have individual titles the 2002 season with similar features as the 2006 season. Sadly, I remembered that I gave my copy to someone to borrow and the aforementioned person never returned it. I mean, I know it’s quality cinema, but have a heart!

So I remembered that I had the original files on CD from when I converted the copy from VHS to DVD back the in day. that began a whole new project while said movies were playing. And thus, I got a new DVD made of Return to Glory. I feel better about life and will be watching it in its entirety tonight.

To that end, here’s a preview. Yes. It is the clip that features my brother’s highlight reel. I can do that because it’s my blog.

Return to Glory

Go Indians. That’s for you, KK.

Sharing is caring

I don’t have anything truly spectacular to write about so instead, I will share this lovely picture I found online.

BTW, Houston is only about a 5 hour drive from here and there’s a good chance I will roadtrip it for a weekend getaway when I figure out when the Mets are in town. I’m just sayin…

Just another Tuesday night

Technically B-Squared’s birthday is today but since Big Metal and she had a conference to attend in San Antonio this weekend (leaving today) we celebrated last night.

Big Metal and I concocted a plan to surprise her with a celebration. Under the guise of a “low-key” dinner at a local dining establishment, we told her that I would pick them both up around 9ish. In reality, we were having a few people over for a backyard birthday bash, complete with white Christmas lights and candles for ambiance. So while B-Squared was upstairs in her pad, getting ready for her aforementioned dinner, I was downstairs, commandeering the neighbor’s kitchen as my staging area. I had prepped most everything at my house…the (Mexican-themed) menu was as follows:

Blackbean and Corn Salad (one of the fine recipes I stole from my mother prior to leaving CA)
Chicken and Shrimp skewered with an assortment of bell peppers and onions, thrown on the BBQ.
Refried beans

And of course, an assortment of cake-flavored desserts. With candles.

So while I skewered our dinner downstairs, P-Money sneaked over and decorated for us. In the meantime, I was cutting the deadline to “pick the girls up” close and B-Squared was getting low blood sugar and was wondering what the heck was taking me so long (understandable since we told I had left the house a while ago and still “wasn’t” there)

Finally, we were ready and B-Squared came down and to her surprise (hooray!) she saw the backyard and we told her of our change in plans.

We ended up having a lovely time, despite it being in the high 80s at 10pm and while it maybe wasn’t quite the low-key dinner that we had told B-Squared it would be, I think she enjoyed herself. We laughed a good bit and ate and drank and stared longingly at cupcakes and puffin cake (definition: not a particular type of cake [eg Bundt cake] but a cake, shaped and decorated like a puffin. And delicious-flavored. Thank you LB and B-Dub!)

And thus the pictoral evidence of the party begins:

My new favorite word

My new fav word is vacay. As in what I just took, that found me in Destin, Florida.

Destin might also be my new favorite place. It was incredibly relaxing and while I have been on some pretty stellar vacations before (Hawaii and my multitude of baseball trips come to mind) this one was probably the most relaxing and most likely served its purpose as time to unwind from the stress of adulthood.

Big Metal, B-Squared and I left Monday morning and made the 4-ish hour drive. We stopped in just outside of Mobile for lunch before we finally arrived in Destin, where I saw this from our room. It made me happy.

Since Monday was pretty much a travel day, we layed by the pool until the sun went behind a building and then we went off to get dinner at a Mexican cantina, where I enjoyed a strawberry daiquiri with my food. Definitely the way to start off a vacay.

Following a brief stint at the grocery store, the three of us watched a chick flick while we ate brownies that we baked in our “kitchen”. They were delicious.

Tuesday was the big day at the beach. The sand was white, the water was warm and clear…definitely not like a NorCal beach.

We even picked up some good karma by reuniting a lost 6-year old with her mom before we called it a day, since I was slowly becoming a dermatology commercial. As I write this four days later, I am reminded of the time my youngest brother had been badly sunburned and had to the put the catcher’s gear on for a game. The thing is, I misjudged the southern sun. I catch a lot more color down here than back home. That’s in part due to the fact that I wear sweatpants and a sweatshirt at the beach at home. So I failed to reapply and I was playing in the ocean for a good portion of the day. Also something that doesn’t happen at home. The water is way too cold to get in. So I’m sitting on the couch and slightly crispy in loose clothing.

Here I am, frolicking:

After Tuesday, we got cleaned up and went to dinner and ended our evening with another movie. Most of which I missed because my shortstop got drafted in the 3rd round so I was working, trying to set up interviews and whatnot. I didn’t mind that so much because, well, it was the third round.

Wednesday was gonna be another “work” day since it was Day 2 of the MLB Draft so we all sat by the pool and I found an umbrella and parked it there while listening to them call everyone’s name. We had four more guys go on Wednesday and I’m only slightly embarassed to admit that I pumped my arms in the air and screamed “yes!” with such enthusiasm that I scared the pool man who was checking the chlorine levels or something when my first baseman got called by the Mets. I have infomed my first baseman of his duty to be my in to David Wright.

After we had soaked up enough sun, we packed it up and it was then that we found out that Big Metal got a job offer (which she accepted) so in order to properly celebrate that, along with the Draft, we went shopping. I am pleased to announce that I got a whole outfit from Banana Republic for $9.00 by usnig my BR rewards. Following the successful shopping trip, we had a quick dinner before picking up the following dessert that also served as part of our celebration. It was delicious. Even on the drive home the next day.

Naturally, we stayed up late watching a movie and chatting while enjoying our cookie cake.

Because we had to return to reality by Friday, Thursday morning we woke up, enjoyed a nice breakfast in the resort community then went poolside before going to pack up and head for home.

It was such a good four days.

What I’m listening to

This is currently being played on my computer with quite a bit of frequency. When I lived in San Diego, I would often drive up to Los Angeles/Hollywood and watch Tony Lucca (and others) perform…it was definitely nice having so many options for music in small venues in SoCal.

Also, if anyone can tell me how to save a youtube video to a computer so I can then extract the audio and put it on my iPod, that’d be swell.

PS- Happy first day of hurricane season.
